8 things to declutter this autumn

It’s officially autumn. As the days get shorter and we start spending more time at home, it’s the perfect time for a little reset.

Decluttering the whole house can feel like such an arduous task but breaking it down into smaller jobs – and tackling maybe two or three a week – can make it feel much more manageable. Setting a timer is also a great way to stay motivated and feel like you’ve accomplished something. Sorting through one cupboard or drawer at a time can be enough to make your space feel noticeably calmer.

So, from clothes and bedding to bathroom cabinets and kitchen cupboards, here are 8 things to declutter this autumn:

Wardrobe changeover

As you start bringing out knitwear, coats and warmer layers, and packing away your summer clothes, it’s a great time to sort through the items you didn’t wear. Sell, donate or pass on anything you no longer want to keep.

Once you’ve edited your wardrobe, organise what’s left so the pieces you wear most often are easy to find.

For a more organised bedroom:

Old or unused bedding

As with your clothing, you may be reaching for warmer layers when it comes to bedding, such as cosy blankets, cushions and bedspreads.

While you’re changing things over, look at your bedding collection. Do you really need every old duvet cover and spare sheet? Keep the pieces you love, then donate or recycle anything you no longer need. A little organisation can also make storing seasonal bedding much easier.

For a cosier bedroom this season:

Bedside table

Bedside tables can quickly become a home for everything from old receipts and books to chargers, glasses and half-finished cups of tea.

Give yours a proper clear-out and keep only the things you want beside your bed. If you’re constantly running out of space, it might be time to rethink your storage.

For keeping bedside clutter under control:

Bathroom products

Look at the back of your bathroom cupboards and drawers. Empty bottles and things you might have received in last year’s Secret Santa but never used can quickly take over! Dispose of anything that’s expired or no longer suitable, then organise what’s left so that your everyday essentials are easy to reach.

For adding useful storage:

Kitchen cupboards

Autumn is a good time to tackle those kitchen cupboards you’ve been avoiding.

Check dates, recycle empty packaging and organise the mountain of food containers and lids. Once you’ve cleared some space, reorganise the things you use most often so they’re within easy reach.

For making the most of your kitchen space:

Home office

Old receipts, catalogues, work notes and magazines can quickly turn into piles of clutter.

Recycle anything you no longer need and file important paperwork. For magazines and books you want to keep, a simple shelving solution can help keep surfaces clear.

For keeping things organised:

The hallway

Before the coats, boots, scarves and umbrellas come out for autumn, give your hallway a clear-out.

Put away anything that doesn’t belong there, get rid of shoes the children have outgrown, tackle the multiple bags piling up and create a dedicated place for the things you use every day.

For a more organised entrance:

Living room surfaces

Coffee tables, sideboards and shelves can easily become cluttered.

Rather than removing everything, edit what you have on display, keeping the items you love. Moving a few things can completely change how a room feels.
