It only feels like yesterday we were climbing up to the loft and bringing down Christmas decs – now we’re storing them away and getting ready for a brand new year.
“It’s always a sad moment when the last of the Christmas decorations are taped back up into their cardboard box and shoved in the loft. The little baubles wave at you goodnight as they go into hibernation, and the wilted Christmas foliage makes its way to the garden waste bin. But fear not, there are plenty of ways to perk up your after-Christmas winter décor”, explains Tamara Kelly at Ideal Home.
If you were keen to get the festive cluttercore packed up or waited until this week to reluctantly take everything down, now is a good time to reset your home for 2023. Here are our top tips on where to get started:
Start with a clean slate
A mini clean before spring is always a good idea – once everything is carefully put away, start by clearing surfaces, dust and clean, remove all rubbish and recycling, and finish with a laundry catch-up. After having the kids home from school for a few weeks and numerous social gatherings, putting your removable sofa covers in the wash can make the world of difference.
Switch things up
While your home is tidy and pared back, it’s worth re-evaluating the space and changing things around. For instance, moving a rug from the bedroom to the living room, having a furniture reshuffle, or even just mixing up your existing décor, can make everything feel fresh and interesting for the year ahead.
Stay toasty
We’re still in the depths of winter so stay snug and comfy with the hibernation mode on. Think sherpa throws, uber-soft faux fur cushions and cosy mood lighting. And, if you weren’t lucky enough to get any of these hot water bottle delights from Santa, now is the time to invest – save on heating and wrap up warm.
Add something new

Go green
We’re so used to our homes being filled with a large green tree and festive foliage; it feels somewhat flat now it has all been removed! Fill the void with scented candles and diffusers, fresh seasonal flowers, or striking house plants – real or faux. Boost your mood and bring the outside in with a nod to the beginnings of spring.
