Lofty ideas: how to choose the right furniture for your loft conversion

We’re currently at the peak of renovation season! If you’ve recently converted your loft, are in the middle of doing so, or are lucky enough to have an untouched attic, now is the time to make use of it. Transforming your loft will not only provide much-needed extra space – whether it be an en-suite bedroom, home office or guest room – but it can also add significant value to your home.

The only obstacle you’re likely to encounter is working around tricky pitched ceilings and limited eaves storage. So, we’ve gathered some clever ideas for furniture and storage solutions to help you plan out your dream space.

Start with the bed

If you’re planning to use your loft as a new master bedroom, choosing a bed and deciding where to place it should be your first priority. Once you know where the bed goes, work your way down your list of furniture in size order, starting from the largest to the smallest: bedside table, desk, storage, chair, lights and soft furnishings.

Height is often a restriction when it comes to lofts, so look for low bed options to fit within your space, such as this low-level platform bed. Its petite 15cm height means it can fit within the snuggest of roof spaces.

And if you’re looking for a bed with integrated storage, the Loop bed is a great option. At just 40cm in height up to its headboard, it comes complete with six drawers – including two that can be used as bedside tables – providing ample vital storage.

Stick with slender furniture

If you’ve decided to have fitted wardrobes, placing your remaining furniture will become more straightforward as there will be fewer areas to choose from. In this case, be sure to place furniture in spots that will not obstruct your use of the wardrobe.

If freestanding furniture is more your style, narrow pieces will be ideal. Check out this oak narrow wardrobe and vanity chest of drawers, both with an impressive 50cm square footprint. The Mirage bedside table is also a super sleek option, perfect for small space living.

Make each piece work harder for you

With more people now shifting to hybrid working, setting up an appropriate work-from-home space is essential for productivity. Whether your loft will be solely used as an office or you’ll dedicate a nook to your craft, a compact desk like the Nook writing desk is hard to beat. Streamline your workspace with this well-proportioned desk, which comes complete with a spacious storage drawer separated into three sections – a great choice for tidying work away if you want it to double up as a dressing table.

Complete the look with the Rialto stool for the ultimate in multifunctional living. Designed to slip easily under desks and tables, it seamlessly blends style and practicality – lift off its lid to reveal hidden storage, ideal for extra bedding and blankets.

If your loft is intended as a guest room, opting for a futon sofa bed will free up additional space. The Bella two-seater sofa has a clever recliner function that easily converts from sofa to bed in seconds – so you’re ready for any impromptu guests at a moment’s notice.

Keep the colour palette neutral

For lofts with lower head heights or pitched ceilings, avoid decorating with dark shades to prevent the space from feeling small and enclosed. Opt for light and neutral tones for walls and furnishings to give your room an airy feel. Mirrors can help open up the space by reflecting light around the room, making it feel larger.

Declutter and store well

Before embarking on a loft conversion, it’s key to have a thorough declutter. While you’ll be gaining an extra floor, you will essentially be losing a large storage room for items not needed on a regular basis, such as Christmas decorations, seasonal clothes and old toys.

Fear not – your builder can create a spacious area under the eaves for these items. Once built, stacking storage cubes, shoe racks and storage hampers are excellent for making the most of the space and storing everything safely for when it is next needed.
