The weather is hotting up and we’re fast approaching the longest day of the year – which can only mean one thing, summer is finally here! Not only is June the month for alfresco entertainment and sipping cocktails late into the night, it’s a celebration of life and love with the summer solstice taking place on 21 June.
Meanwhile, big outdoor events are also kicking off, from Glastonbury in beautiful Somerset to Wimbledon in its famous SW19 home. Alas, if you weren’t lucky enough to nab tickets this year, we’ve got a few ideas up our sleeve for celebrating midsummer, and in our opinion, the best time of the year! Here are our top five (and family-friendly) events you should check out this month:
Thought-provoking
Kites Festival (Kirtlington Park, 9 – 11 June) is a newcomer on the festival scene and one that is full of ideas and music for culture vultures. As well as live performances from the likes of Hot Chip, Suede and Candi Stanton, there are comedy and educational talks with topics ranging from the environment, society and technology to identity, the arts, and history. If you love to sit, debate and think with like-minded peers, this is the place for you.

Food-tastic
On 17 and 18 June, Daylesford Organic celebrates its landmark 20th anniversary with a two-day Summer Festival at its Cotswold farm. The event features a jam-packed itinerary for families and foodies; from hot air balloon rides and classic fairground games to cooking demos and of course, a feast of food. It’s sure to be a fun-filled weekend for all – and not least a fab idea for dads this Father’s Day!
Budget-friendly
Looking for something lively yet affordable? Open House is one for you. Taking over London’s Hyde Park from 23 June, it offers many wonderful things to keep you and your little ones entertained – including Wimbledon screenings, children’s workshops and theatre, street food and pop-up bars. With totally free entry, this is an easy one to pop along to for an impromptu picnic in the park.

Godiva Festival (30 June – 2 July) is an annual extravaganza organised by Coventry Council – and this year’s theme is “Go Wild”. Try everything from roaming giant dinosaurs and crafting animal headdresses to face painting and eco crafts. Besides, this is a great choice for those on a budget, with entry to the whole weekend costing under £25 for a family of 5!

If you’re already booked up for June, why not kick off the summer holidays in July with Starry Skies (Kentchurch Estate, 27 – 30 July) – a hybrid between a festival and a camping trip?
