Visual Trickery Using Colour

Clever colour choices can make even a small room seem big, says writer Jenny Coad

When it comes to interiors, employing visual trickery can transform your home. Referencing colour consultant Helen Harlow, founder of she explains that when it comes to home renovations there are no set rules. After all, she says, it is all a matter of personal taste. What’s more, according to Helen, is that it is possible to improve your home without spending a fortune. Clever colour choices are her recommended starting point…

• Start by selecting a paint which is available in tonal shades. Work with a base from a neutral scale then use different tones of the same colour. So for the skirting choose a lighter version of the wall paint
• Feature walls are a cost effective and simple way of transforming a room, even though they sometimes get a bad reputation. Dark grey can really make a room sing. What’s more it can breathe new life into artwork
• There’s nothing wrong with a colour clash, be it an assault of brightly coloured cushions or a bunch of tulips. Blue is a popular colour this season

Futon Company says: You might not have the time, budget or inclination for a decorating overhaul just yet but there are still plenty of colourful furniture pieces and home accessories on the high street which will bring a pop of colour into your home. Here are some of our favourites…
