Tip Top Tips for Spring-proofing Your Home
As big Elle Decoration fans here at Futon Company, we’re forever poring over the latest tips, guidance and advice from global homes and interiors experts. In #06 Top Tips from the Decorators (April 2015 issue) we were particular inspired by the ideas of Maria Speake, founder of Retrouvius, a salvage company and design practice. Her spring decorating ideas are refreshingly simple and easy to roll-out as well as ideally suited to small space living. These are our favourites:
• Do have plants in your home – not stiff flowers but living vases
• Do remember that small rooms can be wonderful – so opening up a space isn’t always the best solution. Colour, wallpaper and fabrics can have a much greater impact when they’re not competing
• Don’t blast spaces with artificial light. Task lighting is environmentally friendly and can provide the spirit that oil lamps once brought to Georgian homes. I love the flicker of candlelight too
She says: “It’s easy to overlook the change of seasons – particularly in London where winter and summer merge – so I’ll bring spring bulbs into my home. I’ll swap textiles from wool and cashmere to linen… I’ll also move furniture nearer to windows to take advantage of increased light levels.”
Futon Company says: We’ve definitely got a spring in our step right now and love the idea of refreshing our homes by moving furniture around and switching to lighter-weight fabrics as well as adding a splash of colour. To get you in the mood we’ve selected some of our favourite spring goodies…
