Smarten up your space

With 2015 well underway and the first snowdrops making an appearance, the evidence is clear – spring is just around the corner (give or take a few weeks!). Which means it’s time to smarten up your space with an early spring clean.

Jo Cooke, owner of Tapioca Tidy which specialises in “helping clutterbugs and hoarders with a… hands on approach”, accepts that banishing clutter can be a daunting process but advises following the mantra “if in doubt, throw it out.” She, together with the Daily Mail’s Alison Tyler offers some nuggets which will help you on your way to getting your space in order:

• Paperwork is often the biggest source of clutter. Go paperless where possible
• Streamline hallways as these can quickly become a dumping ground for shoes, coats and newspapers
• Look for hidden gems. “Where space is tight, consider transformation… for example a built in double cupboard can become a mini study area”
• Show off as much floorspace as possible to create the illusion of space. Hidden storage under sofas and beds is underrated
• Don’t despair of dark spaces. The lighter the ceiling the bigger the illusion of space
