Journey deep into the ancient caves at Cheddar Gorge, Somerset, where the earliest human remains in Britain were found. Cox’s cave, an underground labyrinth that has recently undergone a makeover, now features vivid projections showcasing the adventures of early man. Experience what life was like thousands of years ago – and be sure to mind your head as you duck under low archways which lead to seven small grottos filled with colourful stalagmites and mirror pools.
Cornwall’s much-loved Jubilee Pool is one of the few remaining 1930s lidos in the country, and has recently undergone a renovation. Take a dip in Britain’s largest surviving seawater pool, measuring 300ft by 240ft. Opened in 1935 to mark the Silver Jubilee of George V, this sweeping Art Deco masterpiece curves along the Penzance coast, meaning that you’ll be able to lap up views of the glittering blue sea as well as St Michael’s Mount and the harbour village of Newlyn in the distance as you bathe.
Retallack Aqua Park
There’s nothing like a good long soak, especially when it’s accompanied by a giant trampoline, slides and a scary-looking balance beam. No, this isn’t an extreme spa experience, this is Cornwall’s new inflatable water park. Set in the grounds of the five-star Retallack Resort, near Padstow, you can expect nothing short of an exhilarating day out as you shoot down slides, take on the curved climbing wall, and make a splash as you fly off a bouncy blast bag. Need somewhere to stay in Cornwall? Cornish Gems has a range of luxurious holiday homes available across the country, from romantic boltholes for two to swish penthouses overlooking the sea.
Futon Company says: No day out is complete without a picnic and some outdoor activity (or inactivity – our preference!) and we have just the things to get you started…
