It’s that time of the year again – with top industry experts looking into their crystal balls and giving us their verdict on what’s hot in the next 12 months. So what’s on the horizon? Is “Japandi” still trending? And are we expecting a new take on “maximalism”? No spoiler alert – we promise.
Last week, Pantone announced its “Colour of the Year” for 2022 and the news couldn’t have come sooner! This time round, the colour powerhouse has brought us an ethereal shade of blue to get all excited about. Described by Pantone as “a dynamic periwinkle blue”, “Very Peri” is “a symbol of the global zeitgeist of the moment and the transition we are going through” – which sees our physical and digital lives merge in new ways.
Gaming and – more recently, metaverse – have provided the major inspiration for the new colour. “There’s just no question that gaming influenced the continued usage of Very Peri, and we really want the Colour of the Year to be reflective of what’s happening in the world around us,” says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Colour Institute.
While we welcome the arrival of this red-violet-infused blue hue, Pinterest – another global trendsetter driven by real data – has also just released its annual trend report. As the social media giant put it, “Pinterest Predicts” is a “not-yet-trending report” – “a window into the future, from the place where people go to plan it”. Analysing over 400 million Pinners’ searches, the report – now in its eighth year – examines multiple industries including: fashion, beauty, home, technology and well-being among others.
A whole host of predictions are expected to define 2022. But worry not, we’ve done the hard work for you. Here are some of the soon-to-be big trends that are set to shape our homes (and lives) in the coming months. Scroll on for our “ones to watch” – all handpicked by us.
Curvy appeal
“Arcs are in all around the home,” says Pinterest. “People will invest in home décor such as curved sofas, curved bar designs and curved kitchen islands.” According to the social platform, it’s an emerging trend driven by baby boomers, Gen X and millennials. Barkitecture
Pinterest believes that “pampering your pets isn’t enough anymore”. It adds, “Try animal-first… architecture. In 2022, people will redesign their homes with Fido and Felix at the forefront, from luxury dog rooms to ‘catified’ homes.” Really? Alas, we’re all too weak to say no when it comes to our furry friends.

Biophilic design
“Nature’s built into your home” is what Pinterest calls for the year ahead. We’ve done house plants – so what’s next? Meet “living” rooms.
Pinterest explains, “Millennials are turning to plant-first design solutions to increase their connection to nature and enhance their well-being. Staircase gardens, biophilic interiors and floral ceilings are all on the way up.” Thinking cap on – it’s time to get creative with our green fingers!
