Choosing the right sofa bed for your home

Buying a sofa bed can be a big decision, let alone an investment. Knowing what you need and doing your research is key to the buying process and, ultimately, finding “the one”. But how do you know which one’s right for you?

Remember, a sofa bed is a practical addition to the living space, which should work seamlessly when switching between lounging and sleeping modes. Three things to keep in mind are: quality, comfort and style. Worry not – choosing a sofa bed is not as daunting as it may sound. Why? Because we’ve already done the hard work for you!

As our homes become more multifunctional, there are plenty of options out there to suit every need and taste. To help get you started, here’s our quick guide to finding one that works for you – and of course, those impromptu VIPs too.

Tape measure at the ready
Let’s not forget, a sofa bed is made to serve dual functions and last for years to come. Ideal for small space living, it takes up less square footage than a spare bedroom while providing better comfort than an inflatable equivalent.

That said, measuring your space and thinking about who will be using the sofa bed should be the first thing you do – before anything else. For instance, where’s the best place to put it? How much space do you have for it – not just when it’s closed as a sofa, but also when it’s opened out as a bed? And how often will you use it? Whatever you choose has to be functional and work for you. The last thing you want is turning the room upside down every time you unfold the sofa bed, or buying one that you end up making little use of.

Say no to compromise
Functionality is just as important as style. Long gone are the days when we had spring-ridden, lumpy sofa beds that were neither sturdy to sit on nor comfy to sleep on. You’ll be pleased to know that the new generation of sofa beds is much better designed – all down to modern technology and some “blue-sky” thinking. Design, quality and comfort should sit side by side, and it’s no longer acceptable to compromise one over the other.

Today, sofa beds come in various sizes – from single to double, two-seater to three-seater. Solid oak, birch and pine are among some of the popular material choices, offering robustness as well as a natural look that will fit in with any décor. And for your peace of mind, if you have regular visitors, pick a washable cover that is hard-wearing and easy to clean.

For the occasional host
If space is at a premium with tricky access, we’d recommend going for a sofa bed without arms. Occupying little floor space, Snooze is great for occasional use, especially for single guests. If you fancy indulging yourself, use it for casual lounging and reading when it’s half reclined, or for a quiet afternoon nap when it’s laid flat. And if you can do with some extra storage space too, then Milly comes handy with its hidden compartment underneath the seat.

For the comfort seeker
Luckily, if space is not an issue and you’re keen to throw some “serious shapes”, then sink into our Soho three-seater. It’s super comfy – and dreamy – that will put you in a zen-like state within seconds, thanks to its slouchy silhouette and plush quilted pad. Or treat yourself to our Cosy three-seater which is also generously proportioned – really, the name says it all.

For the style conscious
And if you’re after some mid-century vibes, then look no further than Kobe or Tokyo. With a slimline frame and classic futon, both sofa beds are made from New Zealand pine and feature solid birch arms. Plus, they’re more than easy on the eye as they can transform from sofa to bed in one simple move. Sounds like a breeze, right?

For the five-star host
Looking for something more bold and sumptuous? Our Horizon and Vienna are the ones. Made from solid satin-oiled oak, both sofa beds come in multiple sizes and offer different comfort levels with their futon options. They’re pure luxury that’s sure to impress your guests and get you those five stars.

And when three become one…
Stylish and multipurpose? Then Snuggler or Twingle should hit the right note. Both snuggly two-seaters feature arms that can be lowered to a horizontal position, so you can create a daybed or full length single bed as you please. And this is not it. Under-bed drawers – on wheels, too – are also available for Twingle, offering additional storage space to help keep your home tidy and clutter-free. We really couldn’t ask for more.

Remember…
Quality, comfort and style – you can have it all and your guests will thank you for it.
