6 things to do and see this autumn

We may have packed away our holiday wardrobes and bid a fond farewell to warm summer nights, but fear not – there’s something exciting about stepping into a new season.

Whether it’s getting cosy and settling in to watch the latest TV drama or gathering with friends and family to celebrate all things spooky, there’s plenty to look forward to this autumn. Here are a few of our favourite things to do this time of year:

Watch

The Great British Bake Off is back! Last week introduced us to the new contestants, kicking off with cake week. We can’t think of a better way to spend an evening than curled up under a cosy throw, cuppa and biscuits in hand, watching a bit of Bake Off.

Eat

It’s beetroot season and we can’t get enough of this delicious vegetable. Packed with essential nutrients, beetroots are an excellent source of fibre, folate (vitamin B9), manganese, potassium, iron and vitamin C. Whether you juice, roast or grate them into salads, beetroots are incredibly versatile and work well in both savoury and sweet dishes. Visit BBC Food for some great recipes featuring this vibrantly pink root veg.

If cooking isn’t on the agenda, we recommend The Alma in Wandsworth, London. Its Instagram-worthy Thor’s Hammer roast – a shin of beef slow-braised for 48 hours, served with duck fat roast potatoes, maple-glazed carrots, charred tenderstem broccoli, shallot purée, double egg Yorkshire pudding and lashings of gravy – will have your mouth watering. Need we say more?

Halloween has gained huge popularity in recent years, along with the annual tradition of pumpkin picking, which this year conveniently coincides with half-term. Farms across the UK offer a variety of fun events like mysterious mazes, pumpkin festivals, family fright nights, spooky trails and pumpkin decorating. Visit

Leeds Castle is once again hosting its popular Fireworks Spectacular on 9 – 10 November, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Leeds Castle Foundation. Prepare to be dazzled by a mesmerising fireworks display, with a full production of music, projections and lasers bringing the castle to life. If you’re searching for more firework displays to enjoy this bonfire night, the Camping and Caravanning Club has some great ideas.
